Albendazole
Albendazole oral suspension is an anthelmintic (deworming) medication used to treat a wide range of parasitic infections, including roundworms (nematodes), tapeworms (cestodes), and certain protozoa in many animal species such as camels, cats, cattle, dogs, goats, horses, poultry, sheep, and pigs. It is indicated for the treatment and prevention of gastrointestinal and pulmonary nematodiasis, cestodiasis, and chronic fascioliasis.
Albendazole belongs to the benzimidazole class of anthelmintic drugs and is characterized by its broad-spectrum activity against many types of worms such as roundworms, tapeworms, and flukes in domestic animals and humans. This makes it an important therapeutic tool in both companion animal care and large-scale livestock management.
The active substance works by inhibiting tubulin polymerization within the parasite, which interferes with the worm’s ability to utilize glucose and ultimately leads to paralysis and death of the parasite.
This medication eliminates adult worms; however, eggs may remain viable for several weeks after treatment, therefore repeat treatment may be necessary.
It should be noted that albendazole effectively targets adult worms, while eggs or larval stages may not be completely eliminated. This factor is important when establishing treatment protocols. For this reason, veterinarians usually recommend follow-up treatment after a few weeks to target parasites at different stages of their life cycle, ensuring a more comprehensive elimination of the infection, especially in environments with a high risk of reinfection.
Important Albendazole oral suspension is intended for veterinary use only and must be prescribed by a veterinarian or an animal health specialist.
