Procaine Penicillin and Dihydrostreptomycin
DIMAPEN Suspension for Injection is a broad-spectrum veterinary antibiotic combining procaine penicillin and dihydrostreptomycin, providing effective treatment against a wide range of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. It is used to manage acute and systemic infections, as well as to control secondary bacterial complications following viral illnesses.
This injectable suspension offers a synergistic effect:
- Penicillin : bactericidal action via inhibition of bacterial cell-wall synthesis.
- Dihydrostreptomycin: an aminoglycoside that inhibits protein synthesis at the 30S ribosomal subunit.
Together they deliver rapid, reliable action in food-producing animals and horses
Indications :
procaine penicillin and dihydrostreptomycin are indicated for the treatment of systemic infections caused by organisms sensitive to penicillin and/or streptomycin, including:
- Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae
- Arcanobacterium pyogenes
- Klebsiella pneumoniae
- Listeria spp
- Mannheimia haemolytica
- Pasteurella multocida
- Staphylococcus spp (non-penicillinase producing)
- Streptococcus spp
- Salmonella spp
- It is also used to control secondary bacterial infections complicating viral diseases.
Suspension for Injection is a broad-spectrum antibiotic combination used to treat systemic and localised bacterial infections in several animal species, including cattle, horses, sheep, and pigs.
Dosage and Administration :
Shake well before use to ensure uniform suspension. Deep intramuscular injection only.
1 mL per 25 kg bodyweight (Equivalent to approximately 8 mg/kg procaine penicillin + 10 mg/kg dihydrostreptomycin.)
Treatment duration: Administer once daily for up to 3 consecutive days, or as directed by the veterinarian based on clinical response.
Precautions :
Do NOT use Dimapen in animals that:
- animals that Have known hypersensitivity to penicillins or aminoglycosides, Have renal impairment (use with caution)
- People administering the product should avoid Accidental self-injection Contact if previously sensitized to β-lactams
- Seek medical attention if allergic symptoms occur.
- Do NOT combine with Tetracyclines and Other aminoglycosides
Side Effects :
Dimapen is generally well tolerated; however, some animals may exhibit mild to rare adverse reactions:
1- Hypersensitivity Reactions (Allergic Reactions) : May occur in animals sensitive to penicillins oraminoglycosides. Signs include:
- Swelling at the injection site
- Urticaria (hives)
- Respiratory difficulty
- Collapse (very rare, severe anaphylaxis)
- Immediate veterinary intervention is required in severe cases.
2- Local Reactions at Injection Site : Mild, transient swelling may occur—especially in horses, Typically resolves within a short period without treatment.
3- Systemic Reactions in Pigs (Rare) : Pigs may occasionally show Fever, Vomiting, Shivering and Incoordination.
4- Gastrointestinal + Renal Considerations : Because dihydrostreptomycin is an aminoglycoside Use caution in animals with compromised kidney function, as accumulation may increase toxicity risk. Toxic effects are rare when dosage guidelines are followed.
5- Effects During Pregnancy (Pigs) : Pregnant sows and gilts may rarely exhibit vulval discharge that could be associated with abortion. Use only under veterinary supervision during pregnancy.
