What is Sulfadiazine sodium+Trimethoprim?

Antibiotic

Therapeutic Class

 Pigeon, Ornamental birds, Parrots

     Target Species

 25mg Sulfadiazine sodiu+5mg Trimethoprim

Active Ingredients

Sulfadiazine sodium, Trimethoprim

Sulfadiazine is rapidly and almost completely absorbed orally, with stable plasma levels and an oral bioavailability ranging from 80% to 90%. Its plasma protein binding varies between 28% and 80%, depending on the species. It is widely distributed across most tissues and organs in all species. Sulfadiazine is metabolized in the liver and primarily excreted in the urine.

After oral administration, trimethoprim is also rapidly and well absorbed, with a bioavailability of 80% to 90%. Approximately 30% to 60% of trimethoprim binds to plasma proteins, with variation between species. It is widely distributed in most tissues and organs in all species. Its concentration in tissues—particularly in the lungs, liver, and kidneys—is often higher than in corresponding plasma. Trimethoprim is likely metabolized in the liver and is mainly excreted in the urine. Its elimination rate is generally faster than that of sulfadiazine across all species.

Indications :

Sulfatrim contains sulfadiazine combined with trimethoprim, making it effective in treating gastrointestinal infections, diarrhea, coccidiosis, E. coli, and Salmonella. It can also be used to treat respiratory tract infections as well as genitourinary tract infections in pigeons, parrots, and ornamental birds.

Dosage and Administration :

  • Orally for pigeons and parrots.

  • pigeons and parrots: 1 bolus per bird for 3 – 4 days.

  • An overdose of sulfonamides causes renal toxicity. In this case, the administration of the drug must be stopped.

Precautions :

  • It is advised not to use flumequine compounds during treatment with this product.
  • Do not combine with antiviral agents (amantadine).
  • Not to be used in cases of sulfonamide resistance.
  • Do not administer to animals with impaired renal and/or liver function.

Side Effects :

A decrease or loss of appetite may occur in treated birds.

Gastrointestinal disturbances may also occur, such as soft feces, diarrhea, hematuria, crystalluria, and tubular obstruction.
