Diminazene Diaceturat

Diminazene Diaceturate for Injection is used to treat some types of protozoal infections in livestock animals, horses, and dogs.It is effective against protozoa such as babesia, piroplasmosis, Trypanosoma, and trypanosomiasis. Diminazene also showed activity against bacteria like Brucella and Streptococcus.

It should be noted that this drug is slowly metabolized, so it may not completely kill the organism causing infection.

However, it can reduce the severity of the pathogen. In some cases, additional drugs might be needed. In some species of animals, retreatment may be necessary.

Diminazene is classified as an organic diamidine compound. It is thought to work by affecting the RNA or preventing DNA replication within the microorganism.

Diminazene diaceturate is sometimes referred to as diminazene aceturate and diminazene.

Indications :

Indicated for the treatment of infections caused by blood parasites, including:

Trypanosoma spp. (T. congolense, T. vivax, T. brucei)
Piroplasms, including Babesia spp. (B. bovis, B. bigemina, B. ovis, B. motasi, B. canis, and other Babesia species) and Theileria annulata
Mixed infections caused by Babesia and Trypanosoma species

It is also recommended for use in managing conditions associated with immunosuppression following temporary tick disappearance or when animals are moved from tick-free areas to tick-infested regions.

Dosage and Administration :

To be administered by intramuscular injection .

The usual dose is 3.5mg per 1kg of body weight. For infections caused by Tr. brucei, Tr. evansi and Theileria annulata,the dose should be 7mg per kg of body weight. The dose may be increased to 8mg/kg for infections caused byresistant strains. The maximum dose is 5g for one animal.

Precautions :

Do NOT use Diminazene Diaceturate for Injection for an animal that: has a known allergy or hypersensitivity to penicillin.

Treatment with this drug should be administered with caution in an animal that: • is in the camelid species.

High doses of this medication are associated with toxicity in many animals.

Side Effects :

As with all pharmaceuticals, some unwanted effects can occur from the use of Diminazene Diaceturate for Injection.

Some reported side effects include but are not limited to:

gastrointestinal effects
tachycardia
salivation
colic
hypotension

Serious side effects may include :

CNS effects, including ataxia
