Dimapen is a veterinary injectable antibiotic containing procaine penicillin and dihydrostreptomycin for the treatment of bacterial infections caused by susceptible microorganisms. For use in the animal species specified in the approved product leaflet, under veterinary supervision.

?What is Dimapen

Dimapen combines procaine penicillin and dihydrostreptomycin, two antibiotics with complementary mechanisms of action. It is intended for veterinary treatment of infections caused by bacteria susceptible to its active ingredients.

Active ingredients

Procaine penicillin: A penicillin antibiotic that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis in susceptible bacteria

Dihydrostreptomycin: An aminoglycoside antibiotic that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit

Complementary antibacterial activity

The two ingredients act on different bacterial targets and provide activity against a range of susceptible Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Treatment should be based on veterinary assessment and the approved indications for the product.

Bacterial infections associated with viral disease

Dimapen does not treat viruses. A veterinarian may prescribe it for a secondary bacterial infection associated with a viral disease when the bacteria are susceptible and the use is consistent with the approved product leaflet

Responsible use

Follow the approved product leaflet and the veterinarian’s instructions for animal species, dosage, route of administration, treatment duration and withdrawal periods

It can be used against infections associated with bacteria that are susceptible to penicillin and/or streptomycin, including:

  • Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae

  • Arcanobacterium pyogenes

  • Klebsiella pneumoniae

  • Listeria spp.

  • Mannheimia haemolytica

  • Pasteurella multocida

  • Staphylococcus spp. (non-penicillinase-producing strains)

  • Streptococcus spp.

  • Salmonella spp.

Dimabin may also be used to help control secondary bacterial infections following viral diseases, when these infections are caused by susceptible microorganisms.

Side effects

Dimapen is generally well tolerated; however, some animals may exhibit mild to rare adverse reactions:
1- Hypersensitivity Reactions (Allergic Reactions) : May occur in animals sensitive to penicillins oraminoglycosides.  Signs include:
Swelling at the injection site
Urticaria (hives)
Respiratory difficulty
Collapse (very rare, severe anaphylaxis)
Immediate veterinary intervention is required in severe cases.
2- Local Reactions at Injection Site : Mild, transient swelling may occur—especially in horses, Typically resolves within a short period without treatment.
3- Systemic Reactions in Pigs (Rare) : Pigs may occasionally show Fever, Vomiting, Shivering and Incoordination.
4- Gastrointestinal + Renal Considerations : Because dihydrostreptomycin is an aminoglycoside Use caution in animals with compromised kidney function, as accumulation may increase toxicity risk. Toxic effects are rare when dosage guidelines are followed.
5- Effects During Pregnancy (Pigs) : Pregnant sows and gilts may rarely exhibit vulval discharge that could be associated with abortion. Use only under veterinary supervision during pregnancy.

Precautions

Do NOT use  Dimapen in animals that:
animals that Have known hypersensitivity to penicillins or aminoglycosides, Have renal impairment (use with caution)
People administering the product should avoid Accidental self-injection Contact if previously sensitized to β-lactams
Seek medical attention if allergic symptoms occur.
Do NOT combine with Tetracyclines and Other aminoglycosides

It is used to manage a wide range of infections, including:

• Respiratory infections (pneumonia, pasteurellosis)
 • Septicemia
 • Joint and bone infections
 • Metritis
 • Abscesses and wound infections
 • Listeriosis
 • Erysipelas in pigs

Control of Secondary Bacterial Infections

DIMAPEN  can also be used to control secondary bacterial infections that occur alongside viral diseases, helping reduce complications and improve recovery.
